I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that Google does not allow 3rd party apps to read if someone is home or not.
But if they did it would solve the someone home question

I don’t think it is possible, but I will re-check.
Google now has new program to access information from Nest products, but that does not apply to “any” device connected to Google home.

As most users have cell phones on them, I used a router ifttt to set status.

Using the Wifi connection status as an indicator for presence is probably the most reliable way to determine it without buying any additional hardware. For iOS users it cannot be done from the phone but you need one of the routers that have an interface to IFTTTT.
